Te Awanga Estate, Hawkes Bay
Where do we start? Rod McDonald was head winemaker at Vidal Estate for 9 years when he was crowned "New Zealand Winemaker of the Year" in 2006. Later that year he fulfilled his dream to set up by himself and started his own business which now produces a family of wines including his "Te Awanga Estate" range from vineyards overlooking the sea in Hawke's Bay, his flagship, tiny production "Trademark" and his funky, research and development range called "One Off"
A huge proponent of Chardonnay and Syrah and what Hawke's Bay can do for these varieties he has spent the last 10 years building a reputation as "one to watch" and a "rising star", culminating last year in an armful of trophies for his Syrah including "Champion Red Wine" at the International Wine Challenge. Imagine that.....a farmer's boy from Hawke's Bay beating the kings of the Rhone. We'll leave that with you......
"Mister" was created only last year as a range that stands apart from his Te Awanga Estate wines. With award-winning packaging and a look that really makes you want to pick it up and stroke it, the wines are approachable and modern but really show what Hawke's Bay can do for New Zealand. A capsule range of 5 wines, these demonstrate perfectly the differences in grape varieties with the characteristics of each being very cleverly identified on each of the different funky labels.
